Memory modules are one of the components that we usually demand the most. However, we seldom pay attention to their proper cooling, and in most cases everything is left to the heat sink that comes included, or we add one if none is provided. Any heat sink relies, among many things, on its dissipation surface area and the air flow on it. With the exception of some top brands’ latest products, there isn’t much to do about the problem on the dissipation surface area, since the heat sink’s dissipation surface area is quite limited -it is just slightly bigger than the dissipation surface area of the memory chips. As regards the air flow on the heat sink, again, the memory modules are usually badly affected, as this is relied mostly on the flow of air inside the PC case. Not a promising outlook, indeed. If put together the limited dissipation surface area and the limited flow of air, we obtain memory modules working at higher temperatures than we would usually allow in any other component, such as the video card memories.
